Two MAPGA Junior Golf Tour members are heading to U.S. Open final qualifying this June. Liam Maclauchlan of Moseley, Virginia, shot 2-under on his birthday at PB Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville, Maryland, co-medaling with MAPGA Professional Greg Pieczynski. Colton Rodgers of Great Falls, Virginia, shot 3-under at Keswick Club in Keswick, Virginia, co-medaling with MAPGA Professional Larkin Gross, PGA. Both are scheduled for Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, on June 8.

Maclauchlan didn’t get off to a great start at PB Dye. His opening holes were rough, and he knew it. He found his game on the back nine, made several birdies coming in, and checked the leaderboard on hole 15 to find himself tied for the lead at 2-under.

“I got to two under and I saw that I was tied for the lead and I was kind of surprised. I thought maybe someone was going to shoot four under or five under.”

The round happened to fall on his birthday.

Maclauchlan is one of the more decorated junior players in the region. He won the 2025 Virginia State Amateur and was named the 2025 VSGA Men’s Player of the Year and VSGA Junior Golfer of the Year. He and his brother Noah won back-to-back MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four Ball Championship titles, and he has committed to University of Virginia golf as a Class of 2027 prospect. He works with coach Jay Woodson.

He’s not changing his approach for Woodmont. “I go into every event to try to play my best and win,” he said. “If I put my focus into ‘I’m gonna win this event,’ I think that really helps my game.” His dad will have the bag.

Colton Rodgers

Colton Rodgers

Rodgers, a Class of 2028 sophomore at The Potomac School in McLean, has been playing in USGA local qualifying since he was 14. This was his third year entering and his first time making it through.

He came out hot at Keswick Club. Through 11 holes, he was five under. He cooled off late but managed his way home. His high school golf coach, Coach Takis, had the bag.

“I got hot early, was five under through eleven. I managed the misses late and was able to hold on.”

Rodgers won the 2025 VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship and the 2025 Denny McCarthy Invitational and competed in the 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur. He has worked with PGA coach Zach Allen at River Bend Golf Course since he was four years old.

“I couldn’t be where I’m at without him.”

His plan for June 8 is the same one that worked at Keswick. “I almost had nothing to lose, and that was kind of the mentality,” he said. “Just go out there and have a good time.”
