Haymarket, VA – Larkin Gross, PGA (Springfield G&CC) didn’t waste any time getting back on the course after his PGA Championship debut in Kiawah Island, SC last week. He was ready to compete for and win the MAPGA Central Chapter Championship at The Piedmont Club. No amount of wind could compare to what he faced at The Ocean Course and he was able to shoot a bogey free round of 6-under par 66. Playing in the same group, Billy Hoffman, PGA (Westwood CC) was leading the tournament after he holed out for eagle from the fairway bunker on number ten. John O’Leary, PGA (Trump National-DC) also got into the mix with an eagle on the difficult par-5 12th and a birdie on 18 to get into the clubhouse at 4-under. Hoffman made birdies on 14 and 15 to get to 5-under and one shot ahead of O’Leary. Gross was plugging along and made his move down the stretch. He birdied 16 and 17 and made an eagle on 18 to win the Championship by one shot.
The Senior Division was not as tight as Brendan McGrath, PGA (Hidden Creek CC) got off to a good start with a front nine 2-under-par 34. He made another birdie on 12 but gave two shots back on 14 and 15. He was able to steady himself through the next three holes and par out, giving him the Central Chapter Senior Championship by 3 shots.
