The first round of the MAPGA Spring Fling saw beautiful weather and even better golf.
In the Overall Girls Division, the leader after round one is Skylar Sload, of Ashburn, Va. Sload carded a first round score of 1-under-par-71, including a 34 on the back-nine. She said of her round, “I was making sure that I stayed calm and positive, made sure my tempo was fluid, and I just went out there and had fun.
Sload said of her strategy tomorrow, “I’m just going to do the same things: stay positive, make sure my tempo is easy, and play away from all the trouble.”
In the Overall Boys Division, the leader halfway through is Carlo Pizzano, of College Park, Md., with an even-par 72. Pizzano got off to a slow start with bogeys on holes 1 and 2, but steadied himself with a birdie on No. 3, and chipped in for another birdie on the 8th. He was happy with his round, saying “This is my first tournament of the year, so I was just trying to enjoy the process. I’ve been practicing hard the last few week and it worked out well. I felt calm out there.”
Pizzano remains focused on taking it one shot at a time, saying he plans to “play golf and let the round come to me.”
The Boys 13 & Under Division also saw some excellent play with Ronnie Kim, of Olney, Md. carding a 3-under-par-69 to lead by six. Ronnie credited his low round in part to his strong play off the tee. Ronnie’s plan for victory tomorrow is “just to do the same thing as today.”
As the leaders look to hold off a strong field and claim victory in the final round tomorrow at Chantilly National, we would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Chantilly National for hosting a great event, which looks to have an exciting finish on Friday.
