The final round of the 2017 MAPGA Spring Fling featured five divisions of the Middle Atlantic’s best junior golfers competing at Chantilly National Golf & Country Club in Chantilly, Va.
In the Overall Girls Division, Elizabeth Coffren won by two strokes over Skylar Sload, finishing 75-72.
“I felt really strong today,” Coffren said. “I wanted to win and I was consistent. My putting was great and it feels really good to win one and get that confidence.”
In the Overall Boys group, Nikita Gubenko won by four strokes going 76-72 in two days of competition.
“I got a new putter and it made me feel really confident,” Gubenko said. “I made a lot of birdies, had an eagle on No. 9 and that helped me shoot a 72 today.
Gubenko at one point during his final round had a streak of three straight birdies and an eagle.
“It’s definitely a confidence booster to win this early in the season with a good number of birdies,” Gubenko said. “It’s great to have that confidence heading into the summer.”
Sophie Simon led the Girls 12-14 age group with an impressive 8-stroke victory, finishing 74-77.
“I played really well the first day,” Simon said. “Today I wasn’t as strong, but I had some good moments. There’s some thing I need to work on, but overall it was good.”
In the youngest Boys Division, Ronnie Kim continued his strong play from Thursday and finished atop the leaderboard with an even-144 to win by two strokes.
Mitchell Hummel finished second in the Overall Boys Division, but won the Boys 16-18 with an 8-over-152.
The next MAPGA Patriot Junior Series competition is April 29-30 at the MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball at Ford’s Colony Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
