This past week, the Middle Atlantic Section experienced something truly special in its first local qualifier of the year at Talbot Country Club.
For the first time in an MAPGA Drive, Chip & Putt local qualifier, three brothers will be moving on to the sub-regional in three separate DCP divisions.
Jack, Tommy and Mac Morrison all finished the afternoon with at least one first place ribbon in the overall competition or individual events.
Jack, 14, finished second in the Boys 14-15 Division and placed first in chipping. Tommy, 12,finished first overall in the Boys 12-13 Division and Mac, 8, placed second overall in the Boys 7-9 Division with a first place ribbon in driving.
It’s hard to miss the Morrison family at MAPGA Junior Tour events. At 6-foot-3 with size 15 shoes and still growing, both Jack and Tommy tower over their fellow competitors on the tee. There’s no question Mac will be joining them shortly, both in size and finishing positions on MAPGA leaderboards. He’s already scoring wins on the MAPGA Mini Mulligans Tour.
Skilled in golf athletically, the Morrison Boys are just as impressive in how they conduct themselves on the course. These young men are beyond respectful and gracious at events, always thanking MAPGA staff, rules officials and treating fellow competitors like a fourth Morrison brother.
“We have two mottos in the family,” said Allison Morrison, the boys’ mother. “The family motto is ‘doing your best is more important than being the best’ and the school motto is ‘work hard, play hard, pray hard and be a great guy.’ I’m most proud of their attitude and gratitude toward golf and their competitors.”
Tommy is the No. 1 ranked junior golfer for the class of 2023 in Maryland and it shows in his preparation. Before each tournament, Tommy and Jack research the course on Google Earth, play a practice round and endlessly work on their short game.
Currently, the boys attend school at Mater Dei School in Bethesda, Md. and are coached by Bernie Najar, PGA at Caves Valley and play at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md.
