Day 1-Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Gets Off to Blazing Start

Round One of the Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship has concluded from Piedmont Club in Haymarket, Virginia. The competition is fierce, as the region’s top players compete for the chance win the Nordlinger Cup. They are also fighting to advance to the National Junior PGA Championship, and the right to represent their state in the Capital Cup.

The Boys Overall Division is being headed by a trio of 69’s (-3) from Zachary Maloy, Carlo Pizzano, and Brad Riley. Defending champion Marshall Meisel is currently in fourth place after shooting a 70. The Boys 12 & Under Division also has a tie at the top. Matt Moloney and Ryan Slonaker both shot a one over par 73.

Faith Choi is leading the Girls Overall Division at two under par, shooting a 70. Skylar Sload sits in second with a 71. Leading the Girls 12 & Under Division are Irene Kim and Catherine Qiu who finished the round shooting 76.

Zachary Maloy, a resident of Potomac, MD, is coming off of a top five overall finish at the Cherry Blossom. He is leading the Boys 13-15 division with Marshall Meisel right on his tail. Carlo Pizzano, the 2018 Boys Cherry Blossom Classic Champion, shot the only bogey-free round of the day and is currently leading the Boys 16-18 division alongside Brad Riley. Brad came out of the turn on fire, with birdies on holes ten, eleven, and twelve. His key to winning the event is pretty straightforward, “just trying to play like I did today. Keep hitting fairways, keeping [the ball] on good spots on the green below the hole, and just give myself the best chance.” He mentioned grinding out some par saves on the front nine, but the three straight birdies to open up the back turned the round in the direction he wanted it. There are nine players within three strokes of Brad, Carlo, and Zachary.

Faith Choi of Frederick, MD is not only leading the Girls 13-15 Division but also the Overall Girls Division. She finished the round strong with two birdies in her last six holes. She qualified for the Championship by winning her qualifier on May 6th at Cattail Creek Country Club and she looks to add another win to her resume. Right behind her in the Overall Division and leading the Girls 16-18 Division is Skylar Sload, who finished her round with birdies on two of her final three holes. Skylar says her goal for tomorrow is to “keep moving forward one hole at a time.” She wants to focus on hitting the fairways and greens and to stay calm during the round. Skylar said that making it to the Junior PGA Championship would be a huge accomplishment for her, as since she only started playing four years ago. Both Skylar and Faith will be up against Bailey Davis and 2018 Girls Cherry Blossom Classic Champion Faith McIlvain, who both sit at even par.

Tomorrow’s final round kicks off at 7:30 AM at Piedmont Club. Full results of today’s round can be found at: https://bit.ly/2lRCAhQ.
