Temperatures and tee shots soared today at the final round of the Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship hosted by Piedmont Golf Club in Haymarket, Virginia. In the final round of competition was extremely competitive as contestants battled the heat and each other in their pursuit to take home The Nordlinger Cup. The competition was full of highlights including a hole-in-one on the 16th Hole by Caleb Taylor of Woodbine, Maryland. Benjamin Cooper of Woodbridge, Virginia completed his back nine with two birdies and an eagle to finish with a round of 69, 3-under-par. The Middle Atlantic PGA would like to thank Head Golf Pro Sean Doland of Piedmont Golf Club and his staff for allowing us to host our event at their prestigious golf course.
In the Boys 16-18 Division Carlo Pizzano of College Park, Maryland took First Place with a first-round score of 69 and a second round score of 73 for a two-day total of 142, 2-under-par. Pizzano is having an outstanding year, this being his second victory after taking home the Overall Boy’s title at The Cherry Blossom Classic a few weeks ago. The second place finisher in the older boys division was Hunter Jewett from McLean, Virginia. Jewett shot even par, 72, in his first round and shot a 71 on the second day of competition for a two-day total of 143, 1-under-par. The Third-place finisher was Kyle Nordheimer who had a first and second round score of 72 for a two-day total of 144, even par for the competition. Congratulations to all the winners in the 16-18 Division.
David Luo was the winner of the Boys 13-15 Division as well as the Overall Boy’s winner. Luo carded a first round score of 71 (1-under-par), coming into the second day of competition two shots off the leader. At the conclusion of competition Tuesday, we had three competitors tied at the top of the leaderboard. Reeve Felner, David Lou and Carlo Pizzano. They competed in one playoff hole resulting in Luo taking home the victory, and Pizzano emerging victorious over Felner one playoff hole later. Luo and Pizzano will represent the Middle Atlantic PGA at the National Boy’s Junior PGA Championship in Lexington, Kentucky. Felner took home second place in the Boy’s 13-15 division after shooting a 71 both days of competition for a two-day total of 142, 2-under-par. Third Place was taken by Zachary Maloy of Potomac, Maryland. Maloy shot carded a 69 (3-under-par) on the first day of competition and shot a 75 (3-over-par) on the second day for a two-day total of 144, even par for the competition.
The winner of the Girl’s 16-18 Division was Danielle Suh from Herndon, Virginia. Suh shot a first round 75 and came into the second day of competition four strokes off the leader. Suh had an outstanding round finishing with a 69, 3-under-par. She made six birdies along the way. Her two-day tournament total was 144, even par for the competition. Second place was claimed by Skylar Sload of Ashburn, Virginia. Sload played well in the first day of competition finishing her round with a score of 71 (1-under-par), leading the competition in her division after the first round. She then carded a second round 76 (4-over-par) which wasn’t enough to take first place, as she finished with a two-day total of 147 (3-over-par). Third Place went to Rebecca DiNunzio of Norfolk Virginia, who shot a 75 (3-over-par) and 73 (1-over-par) for a two-day tournament total of 148. Excellent work, ladies!
Bailey Davis of White Plains, Maryland was the winner of the Girls 13-15 Division as well as the Overall Girl’s winner. Davis finished her first round with a score of 72 strokes, even par and was two strokes off the leader. Entering the clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon, Davis had the lowest score in her division shooting a final round of 70 (2-under-par). Her two-day total of 142 (2-under-par) was the best of the weekend. Sophie Simon of Potomac, Maryland finished second with a first round total of 74 (2-over-par) and a second round total of 71 (1-under-par) for a tournament total of 145. Simon had an excellent start to her second round, making four birdies on the front nine. The Third Place finisher for the Girls 13-15 Division was Faith Choi of Fredrick, Maryland. Choi finished with an exemplary first round score of 70, 2-under-par and rounded out the second day of competition with a score of 76 (4-over-par) for a tournament total of 146. Great job out there this weekend, girls.
In the Boys’ 12 and Under Division Matt Moloney of Vienna, Virginia finished in first place with a tournament total of 141 (3-under-par). Argyle Downes from Charles Town, West Virginia came in second with a two-day total 155. Ryan Slonaker was the Third Place finisher with a tournament total of 159 strokes. Excellent job, gentlemen!
In the Girl’s 12 and Under Division, the First Place finisher was Irene Kim of Fort Meade, Maryland. Kim put together two great rounds this weekend shooting a 76 on the first day and a 74 on the second day for a tournament total of 150 (8-over-par). Second Place and Third Place was decided by a tiebreaker between Catherine Qui of Great Falls, Virginia and Helen Yeung of Clarksville, Maryland, whom both had tournament totals of 157. Yeung immerged victorious after a nine-hole scoring tiebreaker leaving Qui to take third place. Excellent work, ladies.
The Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship was a qualifier for both the National Junior PGA Championship in Kentucky as well as the Virginia vs. Maryland Capital Cup, August 17-19 at Kingsmill Resort. A Capital Cup roster will be posted in the coming weeks.
